This Truthlet® Scripture verse is an encouraging reminder to believers to take captive negative and intrusive thoughts that can weigh us down or sometimes lead us toward sinful actions, and instead call to mind good and godly things.

In the preceding verses Paul encourages believers that the Lord is near (v5) and that, through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, we are to bring our requests to God (v6). He then reminds us that “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (v7)

Paul then gives us a pattern for how we move forward by encouraging followers of Christ to fix their minds on what is true, honourable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable. This verse reminds us that what we allow our minds to dwell on matters. God cares about our thought life and invites us to focus on things that reflect His goodness and truth.

When we choose to call to mind what is pleasing to the Lord, much of which is contained in Scripture, we allow His truth to shape our hearts, our attitudes, and the way we respond to the world around us.
