2. What this policy covers

This policy explains how we collect, use, and store personal data when you use christianmakers.com as a shopper or visitor. It also explains how the independent sellers on our platform handle your order data, and what they are permitted to do with it.

We take our responsibilities under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 seriously. By using our website, you confirm you have read and understood this policy.

3. Data we collect and why

3a. When you place an order

To process and fulfil your order, we collect:

  • Your name

  • Delivery address

  • Email address

  • Phone number (if provided)

  • Payment information: processed securely by Shopify Payments. We do not store your card details.

Our legal basis for processing this data is the performance of a contract (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b)): we cannot fulfil your order without it.

Your order details are shared with the relevant seller on our platform via Webkul Multivendor Marketplace and with email notifications so they can prepare and dispatch your order. The data shared includes your name, delivery address, and the details of what you have ordered. Sellers retain access to this information in their order history.

Each seller on Christian Makers is an independent data controller for the order data they receive. They are bound by our Seller Community Agreement, which requires them to:

  • Use your personal data only for the purpose of fulfilling your order

  • Not contact you for marketing or any unrelated purpose

  • Not share your data with third parties except where necessary to fulfil the order (for example, passing your address to a postal or courier service)

  • Not retain your data for longer than necessary

  • Comply with UK data protection law

If you have a concern about how a seller has handled your data, please contact us at hello@christianmakers.com and we will investigate. You also have the right to contact the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) directly at ico.org.uk.

Personalised orders: where you place a personalised order, you may provide additional personal information to enable the seller to create your item: for example, a name, date, or message submitted via the product listing, or a photo or file shared directly with the seller outside the platform (for example by email). This data is received by the seller and should be used only to fulfil your order. It should not be retained once the order is complete. Where a personalised order involves a photo or image of a third party (for example a family member), please be aware that you are sharing that person's data with the seller, and should only do so where you are comfortable with this.

3b. When you create an account

If you create an account on our platform, we store your name, email address, and order history. This is used solely to manage your account and provide you with access to your order records.

3c. When you contact us

If you email us or use a contact form, we collect your name and email address and any information you include in your message. We use this only to respond to your enquiry. Our legal basis is legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).

3d. Product reviews

If you have placed an order with us, you may receive an automated email from Judge.me, our review platform, inviting you to leave a review of your purchase. This email is sent as part of the standard post-purchase flow and is not a marketing communication. Our legal basis for this is legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) in gathering feedback about products sold on our platform.

If you leave a review, Judge.me collects your name or display name and the content of your review. Your review may be displayed publicly on the relevant product page. You can opt out of receiving review request emails by following the unsubscribe link in the email from Judge.me.

3e. Email marketing

If you opt in to receive marketing emails from us, we will use your email address to send you updates, promotions, and news about Christian Makers. We use Klaviyo to manage our email marketing. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email, or by contacting us at hello@christianmakers.com.

Our legal basis for marketing is your consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). We will never send you marketing emails without your explicit opt-in.

3f. Website analytics

We use Google Analytics and Google Search Console to understand how visitors use our website. This involves the collection of data such as pages visited, time on site, general geographic location (not precise), IP address, and information about your device and browser. This data is aggregated and does not directly identify you.

Our legal basis for analytics is legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) in understanding and improving our website. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking via your browser settings or by using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

3g. Advertising and social media

We may use the Meta Pixel on our website. This allows Meta (Facebook/Instagram) to show our adverts to people who have visited our site and to measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns. The Meta Pixel may set cookies on your device.

Our legal basis for this is your consent, which you can manage via our cookie banner. You can also manage your ad preferences directly through your Facebook or Instagram account settings.

4. Cookies

Our website uses cookies: small text files stored on your device, to make the site work and to help us improve it. Cookies may be set by us directly or by third-party services we use, including Shopify, Google Analytics, and Meta.

When you first visit our site, you will be asked to accept or decline non-essential cookies via our cookie banner. You can change your preferences at any time.

Strictly necessary cookies (required for the site to function) are used without consent. All other cookies require your agreement.

Types of cookies we use:

  • Essential: required for the shopping experience to work (e.g. your cart, session management)

  • Analytics: help us understand how visitors use the site (Google Analytics)

  • Marketing: used to show relevant adverts and measure ad performance (Meta Pixel)

5. How long we keep your data

We keep your data only for as long as necessary:

  • Order data is retained for 7 years to comply with our legal and financial obligations.

  • Account data is retained while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterwards.

  • Marketing data is retained until you unsubscribe or withdraw consent.

  • Contact enquiry data is retained for as long as needed to resolve your query, and then deleted.

  • Analytics data is retained in accordance with Google's own data retention policies.

6. Who we share your data with

We share your data only where necessary to run the platform and fulfil your orders. The third parties we work with include:

  • Shopify: our e-commerce platform, which processes payment and order data on our behalf.

  • Webkul Multivendor Marketplace: the software that connects orders to the relevant seller.

  • Sellers on our platform: receive your name and delivery address to fulfil your order.

  • Sellers will use third-party delivery services to deliver your order. These services will receive your name, delivery address, and email or phone number if applicable.

  • Judge.me: our review platform, which sends post-purchase review request emails and displays reviews on product pages.

  • Klaviyo: our email marketing platform, used if you have opted in to marketing.

  • Google: analytics and advertising services (Google Analytics, Search Console).

  • Meta: advertising platform (Meta Pixel), if you consent to marketing cookies.

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share it with any third party for their own marketing purposes.

We may occasionally share customer photos or reviews on our social media channels or website for marketing purposes. We will only do this with your permission, which you can withdraw at any time by contacting us at hello@christianmakers.com.

All third-party processors we use are required to handle your data in accordance with UK GDPR.

7. Third-party links

Our website may contain links to external websites, including the websites and social media profiles of individual sellers. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites and this policy does not apply to them. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any external site you visit.

8. International data transfers

Some of our third-party service providers (including Shopify, Klaviyo, Google, Meta, and Judge.me) may process your data outside the UK. Where this happens, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as standard contractual clauses approved for use with UK data transfers.

9. Legal compliance and fraud prevention

We may collect, use, retain, or share your data where we have a good faith belief that it is reasonably necessary to:

  • Comply with a legal obligation, court order, or government request

  • Enforce our terms and conditions or other agreements

  • Prevent, investigate, or address fraud, security issues, or technical problems

  • Protect the rights, property, or safety of Christian Makers, our sellers, our customers, or others

Our legal basis for such processing is compliance with a legal obligation (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(c)) or legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) where applicable.

10. Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights in relation to your personal data:

  • Right to access: you can request a copy of the data we hold about you.

  • Right to rectification: you can ask us to correct inaccurate data.

  • Right to erasure: you can ask us to delete your data in certain circumstances.

  • Right to restrict processing: you can ask us to limit how we use your data.

  • Right to data portability: you can request your data in a machine-readable format.

  • Right to object: you can object to processing based on legitimate interests or for direct marketing.

  • Right to withdraw consent: where processing is based on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at hello@christianmakers.com. We will respond within one month.

If you are not satisfied with how we handle your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

11. Data security

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal data from unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. Our website runs on Shopify, which maintains industry-standard security including SSL encryption. Access to any off-platform data we hold (such as seller management records in Google Sheets) is restricted to Christian Makers staff only.

No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. If you have concerns about the security of your data, please contact us at hello@christianmakers.com.

12. Children's privacy

Our website is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page will always reflect when it was last revised. Where changes are significant, we will take reasonable steps to notify you.
